About our Mineral Mix:
Ready to start cooking Auntie M's Homemade Dog Food Recipe? This is all you need to get going! Our mineral mix meets all the required nutrient profiles established by the AAFCO, so you can home cook without worry! Plus, it's derived of almost all natural sources, so it's easy to digest and absorb! Perfect for dogs with malabsorption and health issues.
Have you ever noticed that greasy film on your dog's kibble? That is the synthetic vitamin/mineral blend that is sprayed on after cooking, because all nutrition is killed during the high temperature baking process. And much like a compressed vitamin that you'd take, it is difficult to absorb and ends up going in one end and out the other. Especially for elderly dogs.
Did you know that some poop eating dogs can have mineral deficiencies? It's possible that their need to hunt for minerals is causing them to look for it in other dog's poop - YUCK! But it's a sign your dog needs an easier to absorb vitamin and likely more nutrition in their food all around.
If you're happy with your homemade dog food recipe, but concerned about it meeting nutrition requirements for your dog, then you're in luck. While our blend was made specifically for Auntie M's recipe, it can be added to any homemade dog food recipe. While we cannot ensure that your fat/protein/veg ratios will be accurate, we can ensure they'll be getting the appropriate amount of fiber (crucial for staying fuller longer, good poops and anal glands!), minerals and vitamins listed below! Just make sure to follow the directions below for the weight of your dog.
"But I'm adding organs and egg shells! Do I still need this?!" While a lot of recipes (from Certified Canine Nutritionists) can be balanced with foods only...it's rare that every home cook can find the required organic organ meats, fresh mussels, quality fruits and vegetables (the condition of our produce is unfortunate). Not to mention relying on bone meal for calcium can lead to high levels of lead, and all commercial eggshells are sprayed with a disinfectant containing propylene glycol (best not ingested), plus calcium levels in them can depend on the quality of the eggs.
So what's the easy solution? I always say work smarter, not harder! While adding a mineral supplement IS an additional cost, you will find it is cheaper than sourcing all the needed ingredients to meet those needs with whole foods. I find that choosing a recipe that is sustainable (easy) will lead to longevity in your home cooking endeavor. If you haven't checked out my recipe, take a look! It's as easy as Hamburger Helper!
